Midland's iconic Little Lake Park gardens, stairs getting facelift

'The garden itself had begun falling and deteriorating due to the weight of the steep incline and each tier was no longer holding,' town operations manager says

An iconic part of Midland's Little Lake Park that has proven a popular spot for wedding and graduation pictures is getting a major makeover this summer.

"The tiered garden and stairs replacement project was approved by Council in 2023 and is finally underway,” town operations director Dylan Flannery says.

“The entire garden area and both stairways are being torn down and replaced with a new tiered garden, one that’s pollinator friendly, and one single stairway in the middle.”

Flannery says the condition of the garden made the decision an easy one for the town.

“The garden itself had begun falling and deteriorating due to the weight of the steep incline and each tier was no longer holding,” Flannery adds.

But it wasn’t just the garden that was showing signs of wear, according to Flannery.

“Also, the stairways were compromised with voids appearing underneath and trip hazards above as well as deteriorating limestone.”

And for those walking along certain areas of the park near the former Villa residence who may have noticed a number of seemingly healthy trees cut, Flannery says the decision to cut them down was out of the town’s hands.

“The trees that have been cut in that section are due to an order the town received for line clearing by the electrical authority,” he says.

Developed in 1920, Little Lake Park was the first dedicated parkland in Midland and once welcomed hundreds of campers to set up their tents every summer.
