Pride Month: Every year, cities around the world recognize June as Pride Month – dedicated to the celebration of the LGBTQ2S+ community and culture, in support of LGBTQ2S+ rights. Pride Month is a time to celebrate the LGBTQ2S+ community across Canada. It's also an opportunity to acknowledge the history, the hardships, and the challenges that the community has endured, along with celebrating the progress that has been made. Festa della Repubblica (June 2)​: Festa della Repubblica is celebrated in Italy on the second day of June each year. This day commemorates the institutional referendum held by universal suffrage in 1946, in which the Italian people were called to the polls to decide on the form of government, following the Second World War and the fall of Fascism. National Health and Fitness Day (June 4): The National Health and Fitness Day Act, Bill S-211, became law in December 2014. Daily physical activity is on the decline and preventable illness is on the rise. National Health and Fitness Day (NHFD) is an initiative to challenge Canada to become the Fittest Nation on Earth, starting with making one day, the first Saturday in June, the day when Canadians get out and get active in any way they wish. Portugal Day (June 10): Portugal Day, also known as Dia de Camões, is named after Portugal's national poet Luís de Camões who wrote The Lusiads, describing the nation's culture and history.. Historically, the date is also significant because it is when the country gained independence from Spain in 1640. World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (June 15): World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) was launched on June 15, 2006, by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization at the United Nations. WEAAD provides an opportunity for communities around the world to promote a better understanding of the abuse and neglect of older persons. Year of the Garden 2022 / National Garden Day (June 18): Communities in Bloom and “Fleurons du Québec” in collaboration with the Canadian Garden Council, invite all municipalities to celebrate the Year of the Garden 2022. Supported by the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association, The Canadian Garden Council, through its Year of the Garden 2022 initiative aims to inspire and inform Canadians about the many health and well-being, economic, and environmental benefits gardens and gardening provide, and along the way provide tips and tricks for gardening success and the enjoyment of gardens. St. John Ambulance Week (June 20-26): 2022 represents the 81st anniversary of the establishment of the Barrie Simcoe Muskoka Branch of St. John Ambulance. The Barrie Simcoe Muskoka Branch of St. John Ambulance has been serving the community since 1941 and fulfilling its mission to enable Canadians to improve their health, safety, and quality of life by providing training and community service. National Indigenous Peoples Day (June 21): This is a day for all Canadians to recognize and celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures, and outstanding contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. For generations, many Indigenous peoples and communities have celebrated their culture and heritage on or near this day due to the significance of the summer solstice as the longest day of the year.
