On Thursday, June 27, a South Simcoe Police traffic officer was conducting speed enforcement on Canal Road in the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury. Around 1 p.m., the officer stopped a westbound vehicle for a moving violation.
During his conversation with the driver, the constable detected a strong smell of marijuana from inside the vehicle and investigated the driver for impaired driving.
The investigation resulted in the driver receiving a three-day, warn-range suspension. Prior to impounding the vehicle, the officer conducted a search of the car and located a loaded .357 magnum handgun.
The driver and a passenger in the car were both placed under arrest and taken to the South Division for further investigation.
The Criminal Investigations Bureau were called to assist with the investigation which led them to a home in Maple late Thursday afternoon where officers arrested a female for attempting to interfere with the police investigation. On Friday, June 28, officers from the South Simcoe Police Service and York Regional Police executed a search warrant at the Maple home.
A 19-year-old Maple man and a 41-year-old Brampton man are both facing multiple weapons related charges including possession of a prohibited firearm, careless use of a firearm, weapons dangerous and possession of stolen property. Both men were taken for a bail hearing on Friday and have been remanded in custody.
A 39-year-old Maple woman is facing charges of obstruct police officer and unauthorized possession of a weapon. She has been remanded in custody until Tuesday, July 2 for a bail hearing.
