Get your wallets, appetites ready for senior centre's busy season

November is jam-packed with activities at the Danube Seniors Leisure Centre in Bradford West Gwillimbury

November is going to be a busy month at the Danube Seniors Leisure Centre, starting with the annual Christmas Craft Show and Sale, taking place Nov. 10, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

It’s an expression of the creativity of the members who enjoy activities at the centre — the ladies who meet every Wednesday in the Craft Room, and the gentlemen who use the well-equipped woodworking shop. All have been busy over the past few months, making crafts for the annual show and sale.

“All year long, a group of ladies meets in the Craft Room at the Danube centre to enjoy each other’s company while they create wonderful items to sell,” according to a statement from the craft show organizers.

“They sew Gwilly carrot pins for Carrot Fest, they knit twiddle muffs for Alzheimer patients, they crochet and they quilt — such a wealth of knowledge and talent!”

The upcoming sale offers not only crafts, but new and used treasures, books, puzzles, a huge bake table, pickles and preserves, and a light soup-and-sandwich lunch, available at a reasonable cost.

Funds raised will go toward the maintenance of equipment in the craft room and woodworking shop, the purchase of supplies and new equipment, and support of programs at the Danube centre.

Also coming up in November: St. Charles School — the Catholic elementary school located next door to the Danube Centre — invites seniors to a remembrance assembly on Monday, Nov. 12 at 9 a.m. It is a long-standing tradition that brings together students and seniors in remembrance.

The members’ November luncheon will take place Thursday, Nov. 15, at 11:30 a.m., featuring Elke’s Famous Cabbage Rolls, served with rice, salad, dessert, tea or coffee. The members only lunch is $10 per person, and tickets available at the door. But come early — the luncheons often sell out!

And a note: The centre will be closed Nov. 19-21 for the cleaning and re-waxing of the floors. All programs on these three days will be cancelled and the doors locked.
