COLUMN: Resort's food, service, amenities 'second to none'

Muskoka resort 'always seeks to further refine the experience,' says columnist

There’s little about the JW Marriott The Rosseau Muskoka Resort & Spa that doesn’t impress.

Everything about this property — decor, amenities, hospitality — has successfully set the standard for luxury and relaxation that other cottage country resorts aspire to. And the location, offering sublime views out onto the tranquil water of Lake Rosseau, is second to none.

For 15 years JW Marriott The Rosseau Muskoka Resort has been creating priceless memories. There’s a spectacular indoor-outdoor pool, a splash pad for little ones, and a beach that becomes a centre of activity on long, lazy summer days with its cabanas, inflatable water park for kids, and boat tours. HydroSpa Muskoka offers a range of rejuvenating and pampering treatments, and, with its exclusive pool and hot tub, serves as a private sanctuary within the resort. Diverse dining options make meals a delight.

And yet, despite setting the bar for cottage country hospitality, JW Marriott The Rosseau Muskoka Resort always seeks to further refine the experience.

New executive chef Prasanna Kumar has been quick to put his own stamp on The Rosseau’s culinary offerings — no small feat as the resort already boasted a reputation for culinary excellence. The imaginative menus he created for each celebrate their distinctiveness.

I most recently dined at Teca, an Italian bistro featuring authentic cuisine. The lighting is dimmed, but Teca offers a culinary ray of sunshine.

“Italian food is a classic, and for good reason,” says Kumar, “but there’s far more to Italian dining than pasta, and we explore those boundaries with our menu.”

My pan-seared salmon in a traditional Tuscan bean soup was delightful, and my wife’s seafood linguine was so rich in flavour, you’d swear you’re in an oceanside ristorante on the Amalfi Coast.

In 2022, the resort partnered with Crystal Head Vodka, owned by Canadian actor and comedian Dan Aykroyd. The most exciting expression of the partnership is the Crystal Head Ice Bar, the only all-season ice bar in Canada. Chilled to -15 C and featuring a serving bar carved from ice, the ice bar offers a unique venue for sampling all three waves of Crystal Head spirits: Original, Aurora (made from English wheat), and Onyx (crafted from Mexican agave).

“I’m a proud Canadian. I’m thrilled to say that Crystal Head Vodka is Canadian made with Canadian ingredients, and I’m happy to partner with one of Canada’s premier resorts,” Aykroyd told me in an interview at the time of the launch.

Continuing to embrace star power, last year The Rosseau unveiled an ambitious concert series that has already seen the resort play host to such acts as Gowan, The Jim Cuddy Band, Canadian Tenors, and Trans-Canada Highwaymen. Next up, on July 20, Steven Page, co-founder of Barenaked Ladies, hits the resort’s stage.

New this summer, The Rosseau offers parasailing experiences every Tuesday and Wednesday in partnership with Ski-Mazing Watersports. Soaring above the lake offers exhilaration and breathtaking views in equal measure.

Also new this summer is the exclusive LIVE at JW Marriott The Rosseau Muskoka Resort & Spa package, where guests are treated as stars. The experience includes valet parking and a welcome drink upon check-in, exclusive access to a private beach and pool, opulent cocktail receptions every other day, HydroSpa passes for two, and enrichment activities.

But despite the luxuriant new experiences, what impresses me most is the warm, personal service one receives at the resort.

The JW Marriott Rosseau Muskoka Resort & Spa continues to refine luxury and relaxation — no easy feet as the resort has already set the bar high.
