Bradford kids start Halloween early with ‘spider cookies’

Kids were also invited to brave the Spooky Room… if they dared.

Princesses, superheroes, firefighters, little witches and bunnies — all the rooms downstairs at the Bradford West Gwillimbury Public Library were filled with little trick-or-treaters, eager to show off their costumes, and make Halloween-themed crafts.

Plus, they were invited to brave the Spooky Room… if they dared.

The green room was transformed into an interactive gallery of G-rated horror, with spiders, skulls and skeletons, inviting kids to stick their hands into jars labelled “worms,” “fingers” and “eyeballs.”

And if the worms were actually jelly worm candies, the fingers were baby carrots and the eyeballs were grapes, no one was complaining.

It was all about imagination.

“Yuk!” said one young trick-or-treater, with a terrific shudder.

There were spooky games in the Zima Room, such as Fishing for Ghosts, a scavenger hunt in the main library, and an opportunity to make spider cookies (Oreos, licorice legs and jellybean eyes) as a treat.

And while the kids were enjoying the free pre-Halloween fun on Saturday, their parents were comparing the cost of costumes, sharing tips, and wishing someone would set up a Halloween costume exchange, since most of the adorable little princesses, puppy dogs and baby Elmos will outgrow their costumes by next year.

The BWG Public Library, located at 425 Holland St. W., will be holding one more Halloween event for kids — on Halloween itself.

Spooky Time at the library takes place Oct. 31 from 10-11 a.m., when tots from 18 months to four years old will enjoy a Halloween-themed story, rhymes and crafts and trick-or-treating — all for only $4 per child. Pre-register at the library’s borrower services — and remember to wear a costume.
