WHEREAS:
Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a very misunderstood and very challenging motor speech disorder that affects nearly 1-in-1,000 children; and
WHEREAS:
Children with the CAS diagnosis have a good understanding of language and know what they want to say, but have difficulty learning or carrying out the complex sequenced movements necessary for speech; and
WHEREAS:
Without intensive and appropriate speech therapy, children with CAS will not learn to speak; and
WHEREAS:
Apraxia Kids supports parents and professionals in understanding and raising awareness for CAS. Apraxia Kids envisions a world where every child with apraxia of speech reaches their highest communication potential through accurate diagnosis and appropriate timely treatment; and
WHEREAS:
Going into its seventh year internationally, Apraxia Awareness Day aims to unite these children and their friends and family with community members to be an unstoppable, united force advocating and raising awareness about CAS on May 14th.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
That His Worship Mayor Rob Keffer and Members of Council proclaim May 14, 2022, as
APRAXIA AWARENESS DAY in the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury.
