ohn Street in Bradford is an area local REALTOR® Marco Dias knows well. It’s where his parents lived when he was born; he even remembers being dropped off at the babysitter just up the street.
“Like so many immigrants today, my parents came to Canada with hope and determination. They found opportunity in a thriving Portuguese community in Bradford and turned their dreams into reality—proof that a better future is always within reach,” says Dias.
In 1830, four main streets were constructed by Major Samuel Holland as Bradford’s original thoroughfares, shaping the town’s early development. Among them were Holland, Barrie, John, and Colborne streets, which together formed the historic “four corners” of Bradford.
As a result, John Street is steeped in rich history, seamlessly blending the past with the present.
The post office at John and Barrie Streets features a striking bronze statue of Elizabeth Gwillim Simcoe, honouring her remarkable legacy. An avid artist, cartographer, and botanist, her drawings, letters, and records of the late 18th-century colony continue to be a valuable resource. Governor Simcoe named the townships of West, East, and North Gwillimbury after “My most excellent and noble wife”, as noted on the commemorative plaque.
Nearby, historic homes like the iconic Dr. Lewis Campbell House stand as timeless reminders of Bradford’s storied past—it’s one of his personal favorites in the district.
Today, the street has evolved into a vibrant second business hub for the town. Like a fine wine, its transformation has taken time, adding depth and character to this historic part of Bradford. “The growth of businesses and infilling has truly revitalized the area,” says Dias.
This highly walkable neighbourhood puts you close to transit, shopping, and schools, with some of Bradford’s best restaurants just steps away—making it ideal for businesses and as a place to call home.
“The new Haus development, an exciting mix of condo units and townhomes, will have five Promenade Towns that will face peaceful John Street. This project is going to really transform this part of the street,” Dias says.
His suggestion? For a fun summer afternoon, take a stroll from Three Scoops Ice Cream at 11 Barrie St to Harman Park at 50 John St. Enjoy the historic homes along the way, let the kids play on the swings and park sets, or have a picnic and kick a ball around.
