INNISFIL - On Monday, Oct. 12, 2020 at 3:00 p.m., South Simcoe Police Service officers responded to Cook's Bay for an 18' vessel that was taking on water after losing power.
Police arrived aboard Marine 1 and observed the three occupants bailing water out of the vessel in the middle of Cook's Bay with 2 metre waves. Officers were able to hook onto the vessel and tow it to shore with no injuries or property damage. The vessel had all the required safety equipment on board and all three occupants were wearing life jackets.
Fortunately, this incident had a positive outcome. South Simcoe Police Service is advising boaters to take some extra precautions when boating in the fall:
• Check the weather forecast before heading out and expect the unexpected.
• Ensure your boat and engine are in good working order.
• Have all required safety equipment.
• Leave a float plan with a responsible person on shore. In the fall, there are fewer boaters on the water to help, if needed.
• Wear a life jacket or PFD.
• Dress for the water temperature. This can help slow the progression of hypothermia should you find yourself in the water.
• Ensure you have a fully charged cell phone.
