A multi-vehicle crash closed Highway 400 for an extended period on Thursday night.

Bracebridge Ontario Provincial Police officers responded to the crash around 10 p.m. along with the Georgian Bay Fire Department and Muskoka EMS after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting the crash, which happened near Lake Joseph Road in Georgian Bay Township.

Police say witnesses reported that a northbound vehicle left the road and came to a stop in the southbound lanes, which led to a crash with another vehicle.

Police added that an investigation revealed that the 20-year-old driver of the vehicle tried to use an emergency vehicle turnaround and lost control.

The driver has been charged under the Highway Traffic Act, but police did not release the charges.
