A Toronto woman accused of second-degree murder of a Newmarket man will have her case remanded until next week.

McKenzie Gill made an appearance at Newmarket Superior Court via video to answer the charges on July 25. She appeared in her prison uniform, showing little expression for the brief time she appeared.

She is represented by criminal defence lawyer Sherif Foda, who requested a disclosure with notes and available evidence relevant to the charges. The case will be remanded until July 31.

“Ms. Gill has been in custody since last week on a charge of second-degree murder,” said Foda. “I have requested disclosure from my friend’s office. I have not received anything beyond the initial synopsis that was provided and I would be grateful for a disclosure as soon as possible so that I can put together a bail plan, which is forthcoming.”

Gill was charged with second-degree murder in the death of Blake Bibby at apartment building in downtown Newmarket this month.

York Regional Police were called to the building on July 14 at about 10:30 p.m. where they found Bibby had been stabbed. He was transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Crown attorney Michael Demczur said there is a lot of information and the process to provide disclosure to Foda is underway.

“That doesn’t really satisfy me but at any event, I am going to request July 31 at 9 a.m. via video and hopefully by that time I will have a bail application and meaningful disclosure,” said Foda.
