A six-year-old boy is dead after he was struck by a school bus in a residential neighbourhood in Vaughan this morning.

York Regional Police said the "horrible, horrible" incident occurred at about 8:05 a.m. June 19 in the area of Pierre Berton Boulevard and Kleinburg Summit Way.

“The six-year-old boy suffered fatal injuries and unfortunately was pronounced dead on the scene,” Const. James Dickson said at a news conference at the site. “We are working hard with our partners to continue an investigation.”

Dickson said it is not known how many children were on the bus at the time, but said the bus was in the area picking them up for school. He was not able to say whether speed was a factor.

“The bus driver has remained on scene," said Dickson. "They are being co-operative and being assessed by EMS for the horrible, horrible scenario they have been involved in."

Victim services and peer supports are available to officers, parents, teachers, children and first responders, he added.

Police are appealing to witnesses with dash cams and CCTVs on their houses to contact them. A forensic identification team is on the scene gathering information.

“We’re still investigating it," said Dickson. "We’re looking into all the potential outcomes for events that led to this terrible outcome."
