Despite the chilly weather on Friday, Grade 7 and 8 students at St. Angela Merici Catholic School in Bradford West Gwillimbury were eager to get outside.
That is because they were participating in an all-day flag football tournament on neighbouring Alan Kuzmich Field.
Named the Turkey Bowl, the annual tournament is simply a way to celebrate the Thanksgiving long weekend, said teacher Greg Ellis who organized the event.
This year, there were eight participating teams — all named for their counterparts in the CFL — vying for the title.
The prize? “The winning team gets all the praise and glory of winning,” said Ellis. “It’s just for fun, for Thanksgiving.”
Flag football is a non-contact sport that has much the same rules as regular football, but instead of tackling a runner, the opposing team must snatch the flag from the belt of the ball carrier. It was fast, it was fun — and the action on the field kept the kids warm.
