The Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury invites residents and visitors to join in honouring and appreciating our local lifeguards as part of Lifeguard Appreciation Day on July 31, 2024.

“On behalf of council, we extend our heartfelt appreciation to our dedicated lifeguards,” said Mayor James Leduc. “Our lifeguards play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of our community at our aquatic facilities. Whether you’re enjoying a day at the pool or visiting a public beach on July 31, we encourage everyone to take a moment to show their gratitude and recognize the invaluable service lifeguards provide in keeping us safe.”

As part of the celebration, patrons are invited to write thank you cards using pre-generated templates available at the Bradford Leisure Centre. Children are encouraged to bring a hand-drawn picture of their favourite lifeguards to be displayed on a special recognition board during the event.

“We invite you to share your personal experiences of how a lifeguard has made a difference in your life,” said Cortnee Andrade, aquatic leader at the Town of BWG. “Whether it’s a moment of reassurance, a life-saving rescue, or a display of kindness, we want to hear about it. By sharing these stories and creating thank you cards, we celebrate the exceptional dedication of our lifeguards and inspire others to appreciate their significant contributions even more.”

Residents can submit their thank you cards and pictures at the Bradford Leisure Centre until Aug. 2, 2024. Selected submissions will be displayed prominently to honour our lifeguards’ commitment to community safety and well-being.

Bradford West Gwillimbury employs a team of dedicated lifeguards who oversee safety at our swimming pools throughout the entire year from our community. Our lifeguards undergo rigorous training, including over 150 hours of initial aquatic courses and testing, and hold certifications necessary to respond to emergencies.

International Lifeguard Appreciation Day is observed annually on July 31 and recognized by organizations such as the Ontario Lifesaving Society, emphasizing the vital role lifeguards play in promoting water safety and community well-being.

The Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury is currently hiring lifeguards and swim instructors for the upcoming fall 2024 season.
