Cynthia Riley is the face of a tradition that, in theory at any rate, dates back to the days of the pioneers.
As the trains of Conestoga Wagons passed through small towns on their way westward, civic-minded town representatives would come out to greet the travelers, bringing gifts and supplies in their own wagons – welcoming the strangers, and encouraging them to stay in the community.
At least, that was the story that advertising genius Thomas Briggs told when he launched Welcome Wagon in Memphis, Tennessee, back in 1928.
Supported by local businesses who were interested in reaching newcomers to the community, he soon recruited a small army of ‘Welcome Wagon Ladies’ who would deliver baskets filled with coupons, small gifts from local businesses, and information on the town.
Welcome Wagon Canada has been in operation since 1930. While its American counterpart has gone largely digital, Welcome Wagon Canada still has its Ambassadors, who bring baskets of free gifts and information to new residents, newlyweds, expectant or new mothers, or those launching a managerial or professional career, in more than 500 communities across the country – including Bradford.
Riley brought her basket of “goodies” to the Danube Seniors Leisure Centre this week and just before members sat down to a lunch of home-made lasagna, Caesar salad, vegetables and dessert, she talked about Welcome Wagon, and the items she delivers.
A map of the Town, Bradford West Gwillimbury Leisure Guide, a list of Town contact numbers, County of Simcoe information on garbage collection and recycling, and contributions from local businesses, from flyers and coupons to small gifts - all designed to help newcomers find their way in the community.
“There’s no obligation. It’s free,” Riley said, encouraging the members to pass along her contact information (289-264-6121, or CynthiaWW88@gmailcom) to anyone who might want a visit from the Welcome Wagon.
The members-only Spring Luncheon was well attended, and Riley wasn’t the only special guest.
The kitchen volunteers got a helping hand from South Simcoe Police Special Constable Elisabeth Aschwanden and as dessert was served, the Goldenaires Choir entertained, with a medley of tunes.
