The Powell Group of Companies has made a $1 million donation to Southlake Regional Health Centre to help improve cancer care in Newmarket and area.
The gift to the hospital's Stronach Regional Cancer Centre is the first corporate leadership gift to Southlake Foundation's $20-million HERE is Where Cancer Meets its Match campaign to bring the latest technology to the local cancer centre.
“We’re incredibly grateful to The Powell Group of Companies’ tremendous generosity and commitment to local cancer care,” said Jennifer Ritter, president and CEO of Southlake Foundation in a news release. “This first gift is tremendously important because it inspires others to give and increases the impact of their gift on this campaign.”
The $1 million donation will fund The Powell Group of Companies’ Radiation Treatment Suite, which will bring the latest technology to Southlake’s radiation therapy program and expand capacity to meet the increasing demand for care, the release states.
The HERE is Where Cancer Meets its Match campaign will upgrade Southlake’s original three linear accelerators and add a fifth to allow care for 8,000 more treatments a year.
"The Powell Group of Companies has formed a deep connection to Southlake. Their employees and their families live in our communities and rely on the Stronach Regional Cancer Centre for their cancer care. Their investment in this campaign will increase our capacity to help more people and will improve their quality of life as both patients and caregivers," the foundation said.
The Powell Group of Companies is a group of more than 20 companies operating in a variety of sectors related to road infrastructure.
“If you have cancer, this is the place to be,” Dr. Peter Anglin, physician leader, Stronach Regional Cancer Centre, said. “We have incredible talent here—individuals at the forefront of their disciplines. Our doctors, nurses and technicians represent the very best. With this generous support from The Powell Group of Companies, we can ensure our clinicians have the technology worthy of their skills.”
Delivering cancer care to York Region and south Simcoe County since it opened in 2010, Southlake’s Stronach Regional Cancer Centre has redefined what a regional hospital is truly capable of, the release said.
"Combining the expertise and care options of an academic hospital system with deep community connections, it balances leading edge treatment with patient-centred care."
Stronach Regional Cancer Centre consistently ranks at the top of Ontario’s 14 Cancer Centres and has recently been selected as the first partner of the Princess Margaret Cancer Care Network.
