Backyard barbecuers aren’t the only ones taking advantage of the summer weather by grilling up great meals out-of-doors.

Local churches are also firing up the grills - but on a bigger scale. They are inviting the community to dinner.

Pork Chop Barbecue. This Friday, Aug. 16, Bond Head United Church on County Road 88 is hosting its annual Pork Chop Barbecue, with continuous servings from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Grilled smoked pork chops with applesauce, baked potato, coleslaw, home-made pie for dessert, tea, coffee or cold drinks - all for only $20 per adult, $6 for children under 10. At one time, this barbecue used to attract up to 1,000 diners, who came by the busload. It’s been scaled back, but is still a great community get-together and a great meal. Tickets at the door.

Steak Barbecue. On Saturday, Aug. 17, Gilford United Church celebrates another local tradition – its annual Steak BBQ. Held outside Gilford United Church, on long tables set up beside the ripening corn, diners enjoy a grilled steak, corn on the cob, salad, and home-made pies. Cost is only $20 for adults. Kids enjoy a hot dog or hamburger dinner with all the trimmings for $8. Continuous serving, from 5 to 7 p.m. Don’t be afraid of rain. While the grill-masters continue to barbecue in the rain, diners can move into the church hall. Tickets at the door.

Ice Cream Sundaes. For those looking for something a little lighter, Trinity Anglican Church, at 62 Church St. in Bradford, is holding a Hymn Sing, followed by Ice Cream Sundaes – free – on Wednesday, Aug. 21 at 7:30 p.m. All are welcome. The church is also hosting a barbecue supper. (See below)

Steak BBQ Dinner. Trinity Anglican Church, 62 Church St. in Bradford, holds its Steak BBQ Dinner on Friday, Sept. 13, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Adults pay $20 for a dinner of steak, baked potato, corn on the cob, coleslaw, home-made pies – while kids 10 and under get a hamburger dinner for $10.
