Ice fishing enthusiasts are gearing up for the fifth annual Brechin and District Lions Club Lake Simcoe Ice Fishing Derby, set to take place on Saturday.

The competition kicks off at 7 a.m., welcoming anglers of all experience levels to take part in a day of fishing, community spirit, and charitable giving.

Derrick Patrick, organizer of the event, anticipates a record-breaking turnout this year, with hopes of surpassing last year’s participation of 157 anglers.

The annual derby raised $12,000 in 2024, with funds supporting local initiatives such as food banks, sports teams, families in need, Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital, and Mariposa House Hospice.

“This event is for everyone — whether you’re a seasoned fisherman or trying ice fishing for the first time,” Patrick said. “The main goal is to raise money for charity and get more people involved in the sport.”

With Lake Simcoe’s best ice conditions in a decade, Patrick expects participation to exceed 200 competitors.

“More people are trying ice fishing this year because they feel safer on the ice,” he noted. “Hut operators are providing weekly ice reports, which helps build confidence.”

However, the deep snow on the lake poses a challenge for those looking to go far from shore.

“Four-wheelers will have a tough time, but snowmobiles and argos should be fine,” Patrick advised.

A key victory for the event this year is free parking approval from Ramara Township. Patrick successfully lobbied against new parking restrictions implemented around Lake Simcoe.

“I told the township, our provincial government promotes fishing with this free-licence weekend, and the local government should support that instead of deterring it with parking tickets," Patrick explained. “We do so much for the community, and I’m glad they saw the bigger picture.”

The derby is drawing participants from across Ontario and even the United States, including visitors from New York and Michigan. Patrick emphasized the event’s positive impact on the local economy, with attendees booking accommodations, dining at local restaurants, and shopping in the area.

Anglers will compete for $2,000 in prize money, including a $500 cash prize for the biggest fish. The official weigh-in will take place at Brechin Point Ice Hut Rentals by 5 p.m.

Registration is $60 per person, which includes entry to the derby, a roast beef dinner, and a prize table at the Udney Community Centre. Competitors can register at Brechin Point Ice Hut Rentals or directly through Patrick by calling 705-340-1082.

With financial hardships affecting many, Patrick believes the event is more important than ever.

“This is a great opportunity for families to get outside, enjoy the sport, and help those in need,” he said.
