It’s Bradford vs. Innisfil in friendly Movember fundraising competition

Ward 5 Councillors Kenneth Fowler (Innisfil) and Peter Ferragine (Bradford) are duking it out next month to see who can raise the most money for charity

Ward 5 Councillors from Innisfil and Bradford, Kenneth Fowler and Petr Ferragine go head to head in Movember Fundraising Challenge. Fowler's son Gabe, is excited to see who will come out on top.

It's Fowler vs. Ferragine in the month-long Movember challenge, where men often grow a 'stache in support of men's health.

According to the Movember website, on average, men die four years earlier than women in Canada and globally, men are dying six years earlier than women, for largely preventable reasons.

Every November, all over the world individuals take part in the Movember mustache growing event, while raising money for groundbreaking health projects, – 1,250 and counting – uniting experts from all over the world to accelerate research, progress, and change for men's health.

Last year, both Ward 5 Councillors in Bradford (Peter Ferragine) and Innisfil (Kenneth Fowler) took part in the challenge, raising money for a good cause.

This year, the pair have decided to go head to head for a little friendly competition between the two municipalities.

This is Innisfil Ward 5 Coun. Kenneth Fowler's second year taking part in the challenge.

Last year, inspired by Movember, he launched a fundraiser of his own for Chai Lifeline Canada - an organization that provides support and programs for families of seriously ill patients, including those battling cancer.

"I have facial hair already so me growing a mustache longer doesn't really embrace Movember," explained Fowler.

Fowler vowed to shave his head if he raised $250 by the end of the month, and to let his nine-year-old son Gabe do the honours if he reached $500 in donations. If he raised $1,000, both the hair on his head and iconic beard would have to go.

With hours to deadline, Fowler hit the $1,000 mark.

A week later, the shave-off was streamed live on Facebook.  It was the first time Gabe had ever seen his father without a beard.

"It was not too bad," commented Gabe about his dad's new look. "It was like the same dad, but new!"

Fowler has been growing his locks and beard since the big shave in anticipation of this year's fundraiser.

This time, Fowler will be changing up his charity of choice to Royal Victoria Hospital. Funds raised will support patient care at RVH and the positioning of state-of-the-art equipment to aid in the fight against prostate cancer.

"I think it's very fitting as we just announced we are getting a hospital in Innisfil, so I think it promotes it on a positive note," he said.

Bradford Coun. Peter Ferragine has been taking part in the annual Movember challenge since 2009, growing a mo' for men's health. Last year, he was able to raise $400 for the cause.

This year, he will grow again and hopes to get the whole community involved.

Whichever councillor raises the most money will see their competitor shave their mo' (and for Fowler, his luscious locks too), while wearing a shirt with the opposing town's logo.

Ferragine was all for growing a mo.  But drew the line at shaving his head.

"I am still trying to keep as much hair as I can right now until it disappears," he laughed.

"It's Bradford vs. Innisfil, all for a good cause," added Fowler.
