Find your next treasure or clear that clutter, support a worthy cause, and make some cold, hard cash by participating in Innisfil’s Biggest Garage Sale this weekend.

Organized as a passion project by Ashley Newman and Jacquie Raaphorst, the fourth annual event runs June 1 and 2 in support of the Innisfil Food Bank.

“Our goal has always been to bring the town together, support local charities, and help put money back into people’s pockets, especially in these tough economic times,” Newman said.

“Food bank usage has been increasing steadily in Innisfil,” food bank coordinator Donna Sawyer said. “We currently go through about ($6,000) worth of food each week. Initiatives such as the Biggest Garage Sale helps us help others.”

“We have seen an increase of 78 per cent in the last (four) years over every demographic — singles, couples, families, and over every age group from newborns to seniors. The need is great and we are very grateful for the terrific community support that Innisfil's Biggest Garage Sale is showing us. This is such a cool initiative,” Sawyer said.

“We are delighted to partner with such a worthy cause,” Newman said.

Newman and Raaphorst are raising funds by asking participants for a minimum donation of $10 each. Participants’ addresses will be added to the event’s Google Map to ensure that bargain hunters can find each and every deal and new-to-them treasure.

“One of the most beloved features of our sale is the integration of Google Maps, allowing attendees to easily navigate and explore all the participating locations. This year, we are expecting visitors from far and wide, including Hamilton, Georgina, and even a couple from Brooklyn who return every year,” Raaphorst said. “We are also pleased to offer spots at Moon Café (& Craft Beer at 1041 Innisfil Beach Rd.) for vendors or individuals who can't use their driveways.”

“Each year, the event has exceeded our expectations,” said Terry Jackson, who has purchased goods at the sale every year since its inception.

“The organizers are exceptional, deeply connected to the community, and very proactive in their advertising efforts. They collect extensive information to assist both buyers and sellers, making the entire process seamless and enjoyable. The updated map is particularly impressive, allowing buyers to plan efficient routes and helping sellers attract more visitors. It’s a stark contrast to relying on small signs posted around town.

“Each year, we create a list of items we hope to find and embark on a treasure hunt. Last year, we had a convoy of three cars with fellow Innisfil residents, and this year we will be joined by family from Brampton and Huntsville. The event's reputation is growing, with people from Beaverton discussing it at a recent garage sale I attended,” Jackson added.

The Google Map — which will be pinned on the sale's Facebook group — will be updated with participants’ addresses as more people sign up.

“All the details can be found on our Facebook page, which has been buzzing with activity,” Newman said. “Our community's enthusiasm is truly heartwarming, as evidenced by the overwhelming response we received when we asked for suggestions on which charity to support.”

She told InnisfilToday that respondents overwhelmingly wanted to support the food bank. People have already started posting about selling gardening items, golf and sports equipment, items for children and clothes.

Join the sale's Facebook page for more information, including how to sign up as a participant.
