A new year brings fresh perspective and outlook.

That seems to be the focus of many of the events taking place in Bradford and Innisfil this weekend. While the calendar isn’t exactly stacked, there are opportunities to get to know neighbours, councillors and even the English language a little better.

Here’s what’s happening in South Simcoe over the next few days:

Drop-in family storytime

Join staff at the Lakeshore branch of the Innisfil ideaLAB and Library (967 Innisfil Beach Rd.) Saturday, Jan. 6 for the next instalment of this weekly family event. Expect an hour of stories, songs, crafts and playtime. Get to know other families in your community while nurturing your child's love of books and reading. All ages are welcome, though it is considered most suitable for kids six and under. This event is free, it runs from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. and no registration is required.

English conversation circle

If you’ve ever wanted to take the step of improving your language skills in a fun and supportive environment, drop by the Lakeshore library on Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m. Led by YMCA newcomer services personnel, the free circle provides a welcoming and inclusive space for learners of all levels. No registration is required, just stop in.

Let your child’s imagination run wild

The Lakeshore library is also hosting Imagination Station, where kids ages four to 12 years old can play, create, build, explore and meet new friends, on Saturday from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Registration is required. To sign up, visit innisfil.bibliocommons.com.

Seventh annual Mayor’s New Year’s Levee

Bradford West Gwillimbury Mayor James Leduc and members of council will host this traditional January bash at the BWG Leisure Centre (471 West Park Ave.). The free event begins with a council receiving line and cake at noon, and it will include leisure skating, family sports, music, balloon Twister, coffee, tea and punch. It concludes at 2:15 p.m. For more details, visit townofbwg.com.
