Way to go, Team Canada!

Wasn’t last night’s game a thriller? I don’t watch an awful lot of hockey these days, life just tends to get in the way. But I found myself seated in front of the television last night because it just felt like there was a little added importance to the game.

Few people on either side of the border really know where the political tensions are headed with the United States, but with all the rhetoric coming from the White House, this gave me a Summit Series vibe. Hockey is our game — and, perhaps, our great unifier.

Here’s what’s happening in Bradford and Innisfil in the coming days:

Drop-in family storytime

Join staff at the Lakeshore branch of the Innisfil ideaLAB and Library (967 Innisfil Beach Rd.) Saturday, Feb. 22 for the next instalment of this weekly family event. This time, special guest Trician-Renée Edwards (aka Ms. Love) will lead the way. Ms. Love is an advocate, educator, energetic entertainer, and founder of The Love and Light Collective. The 30-minute circle time is followed by 30 minutes of crafts, play, and parent social time. All ages are welcome, though it is considered most suitable for kids six and under. This event is free, it runs from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and no registration is required.

Take a dip in Lake Simcoe

Innisfil Community Events (ICE) is hosting its annual polar bear dip on Saturday at Innisfil Beach Park (676 Innisfil Beach Rd.). Registration starts at 11 a.m., jumps begin at 1:30 p.m. Proceeds will support the Innisfil Food Bank. Dippers are encouraged to dress in costume for their jump. Just remember this is a family-friendly event and appropriate attire is required. Get more details at icecorp.org.

Brave the cold for WOW Living

The annual two-kilometre Coldest Night of the Year walk returns to Bradford Saturday at 4 p.m. Once again, this United Way Simcoe Muskoka initiative will support WOW Living’s Groundwork project. The event kicks off at Bradford and District Memorial Community Centre (125 Simcoe Rd.). Groundwork is a wrap-around program for individuals ages 15 years and older living in poverty in South Simcoe. It provides consistent support to individuals by incorporating group training, barrier-free mental-health support, mentorship and employment opportunities. Get more details on the walk at calendar.townofbwg.com.

BWG Music and Poetry Circle

What's a music and poetry circle? Come see for yourself at the Bradford West Gwillimbury Public Library (425 Holland St. W.) on Sunday, Feb. 23, from 2 to 4 p.m. Bring a song, an instrument or a piece of poetry. You can also just sit, relax and enjoy as neighbours share something they're working on. All ages and experience levels are welcome. Further information can be found at calendar.townofbwg.com.
