CADETS' CORNER: Local cadets sharing their knowledge

Recent lesson focused on runways, communication and more

Cadets Corner is a weekly column submitted by the 37 Orville Hand air cadets group.

Level 5 cadets continue to teach lessons to levels 1 to 4 that did not include drill, which was a nice break for the new recruits.

Subjects included the importance of airplane runways, strokes of a piston engine, how to communicate as a leader and practising self-assessment.

As a prerequisite for Level 5 advancement, cadets attended a virtual training. The virtual training offered workshops such as leadership, conflict management, and self-care, among others, and was offered regionally to other squadrons. This was a great opportunity for 37 Squadron to virtually network with other cadets from other squadrons and talk about their experiences and build partnerships.

One of the Level 5s, Flight Sgt. Weir, had this to say about the lesson he taught last Thursday: “The first-years/Level 1s learned all about runways. They discussed the markings and lights on a runway and how they affect how planes land. After the lesson, they got the opportunity to use their knowledge and build runways themselves. In groups of six, they used a variety of materials like cardboard, construction paper, markers and tape to build an airport with a runway. During the entire activity, they were enthusiastic the entire time. They learned how to be good team members and give each other ideas on how to construct their airports. In the end, a vote was taken and the Blue Angels team had the best airport out of all the groups. They included all the markings on their runway and even had planes flying overhead. It was incredible to watch the Level 1s work together as a team and they really appreciated the supplies coming from Capt. Holowatyj. This was a truly fun week for them and they are excited to continue in the program.”

Excitement and enthusiasm continue to build with the 37 Orville Hand Air Cadet Squadron.

The 37 Orville Hand Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron continually accepts recruit applications throughout the year. Completed application packages will be accepted both online and in person during our Thursday training nights at Fieldcrest Elementary School from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.
