BWG residents take a hike

A new app also provides details about trails and hikers' locations.

What better way to celebrate Recreation and Parks Month in Bradford West Gwillimbury than with a hike in the woods?

The annual National Trails Day and BWG Mayor’s Hike for Health took place at Scanlon Creek Conservation Area on Saturday. Scanlon is a lush forested 300-hectare property crossed by Scanlon Creek that offers picnic sites, a nature centre, children’s adventure playground, and extensive hiking trails.

The more than 80 participants in this year’s Trails Day events had their choice of a 2.5-kilometre hike on the Kingfisher Trail, winding its way through woodlands and vistas to the reclaimed Scanlon lowlands, or a shorter one-kilometre hike.

There were outdoor games for the kids, including giant bowling and hula hoops, as well as live music with Russ Clayton, and barbecue lunch, served up by BWG Leisure Centre services staff at the end of the hike.

Mayor Rob Keffer, joined by councillors Ron Orr and Raj Sandhu, were among the hikers taking part in the event.

“Another fantastic day here at Scanlon,” said Brian Kemp, general manager of conservation lands at the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority, before leading the long hike. “It’s a fantastic property, and we want you all to enjoy it.”

He also introduced the new, free Avenza app, which provides all the details of the trails and hikers’ locations, and the newly reconstructed Head of Trails entrance and kiosk.
