Impaired driving charge laid after vehicle allegedly tries to avoid RIDE check

Members from the Nottawasaga Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (R.I.D.E.) Program on County Road 90 in Essa Township where a driver has been charged with Impaired Driving offences.  

On Dember 25, 2024, at 11:50 p.m., officers were conducting a R.I.D.E. program on County Road 90 in Essa Township. Officers observed an approaching motor vehicle turn around in attempt to avoid the R.I.D.E. Program. Officers engaged in a pursuit attempting to stop the vehicle, however, the vehicle failed to stop. Officers disengaged the pursuit for public safety.

On December 26, 2024, at 12:34 a.m., officers were conducting patrols along County Road 90 and observed the vehicle that had previously avoided the R.I.D.E. Program. Officers followed the vehicle and were able to confirm it was the same vehicle. After the vehicle pulled into a parking lot, officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop when the driver attempted to evade officers again. However, this time the driver drove into a hydro box and the vehicle became stuck. The driver did not sustain any injuries.

Through investigation, a 19-year-old from Angus was arrested and charged with

  • Operation while impaired- blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
  • Dangerous Operation
  • Flight from Peace Officer

In addition to the charges the driver received a 90-day licence suspension, and the motor vehicle was impounded for 7 days.

The accused was released from custody with conditions and will appear later in court.

Whether you are impaired by alcohol or drugs, impaired is impaired and driving under the influence of either is a criminal offence.
