BWG prepares for “lame duck council”

A lame duck council would occur if the newly-elected council after this fall’s municipal election is made up of less than ¾ of the members of the outgoing council.

With the provincial election nearly over, the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury is already planning ahead to its next municipal election.

The town’s committee of the whole, which is made up of council members, accepted a staff report at a meeting Tuesday that outlines what a “lame duck council” is not allowed to do.

A lame duck council would occur if the newly-elected council after this fall’s municipal election is made up of less than ¾ of the members of the outgoing council.

If this happens, they will be restricted for a time from doing several acts: appoint or remove from office any officer of the municipality, hire or fire any municipal employee, dispose of any real or personal property of the municipality that exceeds $50,000, and purchase anything or incur any other liability exceeding $50,000.

These restricted acts would be for a limited amount of time, which will be determined either by election day Oct. 22, or between then and Nov. 30, which is the end of the current council term.

The report will come to BWG council at a later date.
