The Bradford Lions Club held its annual Appreciation Luncheon at the Lions Workshop on Sunday, thanking community partners, partners in service and volunteers for helping the Lions serve the community for more than 80 years.
There was even more reason to be thankful at the end of the lunch: local realtor Robin Evans made a surprise presentation to two local organizations that assist youth, donating proceeds from his annual charity golf tournament.
Evans and daughter Becky Evans-Rutherford presented cheques for $3,500 to the Canadian Tire Jumpstart program, which ensures children are not excluded from participation in sports because of financial barriers, and another $2,500 to the Leos Club.
The Leos are the junior branch of the Lions, a service club for youth between the ages of 12 and 18.
Accepting the Leos donation was Bradford Lions Club President Jennifer Pegg: “I know when I show them this, they will be very happy. There’s a lot they can do with this in the community.”
Evans noted the two donations represented the last of the funds raised by the 2018 tournament, which was his 10th annual fundraiser.
“That leaves me $38 for next year,” he said, promising to be back in 2019. “As long as I can play golf, I’ll keep having the tournament.”
With the donations, “we’ll be able to help the youth in our community,” said Lion Chuck Skitch, telling Evans, “Thank you for all you do with your tournament.”
A roast beef luncheon by Catering by Colin was served in the workshop located at Joe Magani Park on Line 11 against a special sight — the Lions’ float, fresh from this year’s BWG Santa Claus Parade.
