BioBlitz nature adventure at Rogers Reservoir (3 photos)

The results of the BioBlitz will help the conservation authority understand the state of the local environment.

More than 100 people descended on the Rogers Reservoir Conservation Area in East Gwillimbury for Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority’s BioBlitz event on Saturday.

The conservation authority brought in citizen-science experts in a range of topics — including bees, birds, fish, and mammals — who recorded species while sharing their knowledge with members of the public through hikes and hands-on activities.

A BioBlitz is an intensive biological survey of a specific area with the goal of recording all the living species in that area.

While the actual number of species recorded on June 16 has yet to be calculated, in past years, volunteer experts documented in the range of 500 to 600 different species.

The range of species that live in an area can say a lot about its health.

The information collected during this community event will help the conservation authority’s researchers understand the state of the local environment.

Each year, the organization changes the location of its BioBlitz. Next year’s location has not yet been confirmed.
