More than one local student has died in the catastrophic plane crash that happened early Jan. 8 after taking off from Tehran's international airport in Iran, York Region District School Board spokesperson Licinio Miguelo said.
"We have had reports that, sadly, some of our students died in the plane crash, and our condolences go out to all the victims, particularly those here in York Region," Miguelo said. "At this point, out of respect for the families that are grieving we’re not releasing information as to the students’ identities or the schools they attended until we can communicate with the families to ensure we have permission to release that kind of information."
According to international reporting, all 176 people and nine crew members on board the Boeing 737 jet operated by Ukraine International Airlines were killed, including 63 Canadians, some with roots in York Region. The plane crashed within minutes after takeoff. It was en route to the Ukranian capital of Kiev, media reports say.
York's public board chairperson, Juanita Nathan, and education director Louise Sirisko issued a statement this afternoon regarding the plane crash in Iran this morning.
"Nothing prepares us for the news of the airline crash that took place in Iran on Wednesday, especially one that affects children and youth. Sadly, we are aware that our region and schools have been directly affected by this sudden and tragic loss of life," they said. "We are heartbroken by the news and our thoughts and deepest condolences are with all those affected. This is a global tragedy affecting us locally and we join our families and communities in grieving."
The board officials said a tragedy like this one "weighs heavy on not only our communities but also our country. It is important that we take the time to help one another heal".
The focus in the coming days will be on supporting students and their families affected by the news of this incident.
There are resources available on the board website to support families in speaking with their children, and the board encourage everyone to lean on one another for support during this difficult time.
Those schools directly affected will be supported by school board staff members specifically trained to support with tragic incidents.

"Sadly, this is not the only tragic news of the day. Our deepest condolences go out to all those who have been affected by the active shooter situation in Ottawa," the officials said.
