Probus clubs don’t raise funds for various charities, or require members to sell chocolate bars or booklets of tickets.

Probus is, pure and simple, a social club for retired and semi-retired people that meets once a month to hear guest speakers, enjoy a social time with coffee, tea and treats, and sign up for adventures that range from hiking the Bruce Peninsula, to dinners out.

At one time, only retired professional and business people were invited to join — Probus comes from the words pro-fessional and bus-iness. Now, the club is open to everyone who is retired or approaching retirement, and who is looking for a social environment that provides friendship, fun and challenges.

Probus West Gwillimbury, the second Probus Club in the Bradford West Gwillimbury area, meets on “the third Wednesday of every month,” said Bonnie Keenan. “Come to our monthly meetings to hear interesting speakers and learn about our social activities!”

The next meeting is on Nov. 21 at St. John’s Presbyterian Church, 2940 Sideroad 10 in Bradford, from 10 a.m. to noon.

The guest speaker will be Dan Desson of Fair Vote Canada, who will talk about the organization and what it hopes to achieve.

New members are always welcome. For more information, contact Bonnie Keenan at 905-775-4700.
