The following letter is in response to an article about the South Simcoe Police Service budget, published Dec. 19.

This article on the South Simcoe police budget is trying to do a lot of heavy lifting justifying such a large year-to-year increase that the police will, of course, be granted — an increase of more than 12 per cent over the previous year, all written off with the glib explanation that Innisfil is growing quickly.

I can’t deny that Innisfil is growing, but can you imagine any other source of government spending rolling in asking for a 12 per cent yearly increase, and simply getting it? Education and healthcare spending are also fuelled by a growing population, and they have to fight for every nickel and dime.

A little more scrutiny and oversight of this kind of budgetary request would go a long way for this reader.
