ORIGINAL STORY

Kyle Pitman, the Barrie man previously employed as a teacher in Peel Region who was arrested this week on a string of child sex charges, is scheduled to have a bail hearing today at the Barrie courthouse.

Pitman, 43, faces a series of charges including invitation to sexual touching, child exploitation, possession, printing and producing child pornography, as well as child luring.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and he is considered innocent until proven guilty.

There is a publication ban in place on information that could identify alleged victims in the case, as well as any evidence presented in hearings.

Pitman, who has also been involved with coaching baseball in Barrie, made a brief video appearance from the Central North Correctional Centre in Penetanguishene on Thursday, where his case was put over until today for an in-person bail hearing.

According to his social-media postings, Pitman taught elementary school in the Peel District School Board for more than a decade up until the summer of 2023. It was unclear to what extent he was teaching, if at all, in Simcoe County after he moved to Barrie.

An email to the Simcoe County District School Board seeking clarification on Pitman’s local teaching status was not returned.

Pitman’s online profile with the Ontario College of Teachers states he is a member in "good standing," effective July 4, 2011.

Pitman appears to have been heavily involved in the local sports scene and in much of his social-media postings he identifies himself as a coach. He has also been an active disc-golf competitor.

Having a bail hearing does not automatically mean that Pitman’s case will be heard today. It is not unusual for accused persons having to attend court on multiple occasions before their case can be heard.
