Accounting for over 60% of all the lakes in the world, Canada’s 850,000+ lakes offer a stunning environment for water sport and recreation enthusiasts.

Water sports have always been considered a national pastime, and although 95% of people born in Canada know how to swim, nearly 20% of newcomers don’t. The Ontario Lifesaving Society has deemed new Canadians to be the most at risk for drowning. In a recent poll, 80% of new Canadians shared that they will be in, on, or near the water this summer. It is crucial for all new Canadians, of all ages, to learn the basic swim-to-survive skills to safely enjoy our lakes.

The Ontario Lifesaving Society and the BWG Leisure Centre are making it a priority to educate local newcomers about water safety by encouraging them to enroll in swimming lessons and learning the essential swim-to-survive skills.

To help keep you and your loved ones safe around water this swim season, and beyond, encourage them to take swimming lessons at the BWG Leisure Centre:

  • Adult 1 - For adults with zero swimming experience. Learn how to perform the most crucial and basic swim-to-survive skills.
  • Adult 2 - Helps introduce new swimmers to deep water and important skills like treading water.
  • Swimmer 1 - Helps introduce young children to water and teaches them the most basic swim-to-survive skills.
