WHEREAS: The Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury’s Fire and Emergency Services is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those living in and visiting our Town; and
WHEREAS: Fire is a serious public safety concern both locally and nationally, and homes are where people are at greatest risk from fire; and ​
WHEREAS: Smoke alarms detect smoke well before you can, alerting you to danger in the event of fire in which you may have just seconds to escape safely; and
WHEREAS: Working smoke alarms save lives by providing early warning of fire so you and your family can safely escape; and
WHEREAS: Most fatal fires occur in homes without working smoke alarms; and
​WHEREAS: Fire Prevention Week is observed each year during the week of October 9th in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began on October 8, 1871, and caused devastating damage, killing more than 250 people, leaving 100,000 homeless, and burning more than 2,000 acres of land; and
WHEREAS:​ This year’s campaign theme is “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you! ™” serves to educate everyone about the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home; and
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: That His Worship Mayor James Leduc and Members of Council proclaim October 6-12, 2024 as Fire Prevention Week in the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury.
