A Collingwood man has been stripped of his teaching licence following a conviction for sexually exploiting a minor.
The Ontario College of Teachers handed down its reprimand to Kirk Nielson on July 18, 2024, formally revoking his certificate of qualification and registration.
Nielson's status with the college has been marked as inactive and non-practicing since April 21, 2023.
He was found guilty of professional misconduct on July 18, 2024, almost two years after his criminal conviction and sentencing.
The charges stemmed from actions by Nielson between April 30 and Sept. 1, 2020 when he incited a male student to have oral sex with him, according to the Ontario College of Teachers.
Nielson was charged for sexual exploitation on Oct. 29, 2020.
Sexual exploitation, as defined by the criminal code, involves a person of trust or authority committing an offence toward a young person. The offence includes inciting touch for a sexual purpose.
Nielson pleaded guilty to sexual exploitation in a Barrie court on Sept. 27, 2022 and was later sentenced to three months in prison followed by 24 months of probation plus other ancillary orders. Nielson did not appeal the ruling.
Nielson was first issued a teaching licence in 1994.
He was employed by the Simcoe County District School Board when he was charged for sexual exploitation.
The name of the school is being kept confidential to protect the victim's identity.
