OPP lays more than 2,000 charges in Central Region on long weekend

Almost half of the charges were for speeding, police say

More than 2,000 charges were laid in Ontario Provincial Police’s Central Region during the Labour Day long weekend.

Between Aug. 30 and Sept. 2, police laid 2,034 charges, nearly half of which were for speeding.

The charges include the following:

  • Speeding: 986
  • Seatbelt charges: 130
  • Impaired driving: 47
  • Stunt driving: 25
  • Distracted driving: eight

The rest of the charges were laid under the Highway Traffic Act, the Liquor Licence Act, the Off-Road Vehicles Act, the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act, and the Criminal Code.

Police also issued 410 warnings.
