In Loving Memory of Thomas (Tom) Luke Farrell - January 10, 1968 - January 5, 2025
It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, brother and uncle, Tom Farrell. Tom passed away peacefully at home on Sunday January 5, 2025 surrounded by his wife and two children. Tom left us just days prior to his 57th birthday. He was a source of joy, laughter and strength for our family. Tom, beloved husband of Margerete and devoted and loving father to Ian and Erin, will leave his lasting memory in their hearts forever. He championed all of his kids’ activities such as hockey, soccer and dance. Family always came first for Tom and he enjoyed nothing more than to spend his free time with them and take family vacations together to Nova Scotia, Florida, California and Germany. He had a keen interest in history, politics, genealogy, his Harley and hockey. Hockey was such a big part of his and his family’s life that he was ecstatic when he finally got his ‘Don Cherry’ dog Cooper (predeceased) and Odin, who he sadly leaves behind. Tom is predeceased by his mother Mary Carmel, father John Angus and stepfather Eric Mattice. He was the cherished baby brother to Ken (Judy), Cathy (Doug), Donny (Linda) and Yvonne (Ron). He was the favourite uncle to Lori (Chris), Melissa (Dusty), Tim (Allie), Kristy, Ashley (Travis), Katie (Adam), Daniel (Kristina), Lisa (Daniel), and Kelly. Tom was famous for his quick wit and for possessing a mischievous and dark sense of humour that kept everyone on their toes. He had an uncanny ability to deliver humour with lightning speed. He knew anything about everything and was everyone’s go-to guy. He remains undefeated in Jeopardy in the Farrell household.
Tom began his remarkable career with the TTC Special Constable Services on May 4, 1992. Over the years he became a cornerstone of the organization, embodying integrity, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to public service. His exceptional skills and leadership earned him a promotion to Staff Sergeant on December 1, 2013, where he played a pivotal role in shaping and advancing the Transit Enforcement Unit. Throughout his tenure, Tom conducted countless investigations and arrests, showcasing his sharp instincts and relentless pursuit of justice. His work transcended borders, as he collaborated with local law enforcement agencies and even the FBI, earning him a reputation as a force to be reckoned with. His efforts not only strengthened community safety, but also elevated the standards of the Special Constable Services. After an illustrious career, Tom retired on February 25, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of excellence, mentorship, and innovation. His contributions to the development of the Transit Enforcement Unit remain a testament to his vision and dedication. Tom will be remembered not only for his professional achievements, but also for his kindness, humility, and steadfast commitment to those he served alongside. He leaves a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations of law enforcement professionals.
Tom’s family will be forever grateful and appreciative for the medical care he received from Dr. Susan Kuzmyk for many years and into his final hours. We are thankful to the doctors and nurses at Sunnybrook Hospital for the support and care he received.
He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. Rest in peace Tom. Your watch has ended, but your legacy lives on.
In honour of Tom’s memory, a celebration of life will be held at home at a later date.
