York Regional Police members and their supporters continued a long, proud tradition of shaving their heads in support of young people whose lives are touched by cancer at the annual Be a Hero campaign finale in Newmarket on Saturday.
"We are incredibly proud to announce that we raised more than $100,000 in support of the pediatric oncology unit at Southlake Regional Health Centre. Thank you to everyone who shaved their head and donated to make a difference in our community," the force announced on social media following the successful annual event at Upper Canada Mall.
Over the past 19 years, the events have raised more than $375,000 for cancer research. This year, police officers were joined by their partners York Region Paramedic Services, Central York Fire Services and York Region Transit.
York Regional Police Deputy Chief Paulo Da Silva, along with York Paramedics Chief and general manager Chris Spearen and Central York Fire Chief Ian Laing all got buzzed.
This year’s child ambassador and cancer survivor, Charlotte Wilson, was there to shave the heads of many heroes, including her father, York Regional Police Const. Joey Wilson.
