A world-renowned cardiothoracic surgeon has joined Southlake Health's department of cardiac health, a regional program that provides advanced cardiac care to thousands of patients across York Region into Muskoka.

“I am thrilled to join a team that is a global leader in cardiac care,” said Dr. Moby Rehman in a news release. “Southlake Health’s regional cardiac program performs groundbreaking and life-saving cardiac surgeries to some of Ontario’s fastest-growing and -aging communities. I’m dedicated to providing compassionate care to patients and fostering the next generation of cardiovascular surgeons.”

Dr. Rehman has a robust academic and leadership background, joining Southlake from his previous position as a consultant cardiac surgeon at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London, United Kingdom. He is a U.K.-board certified cardiothoracic surgeon with a special interest in mitral valve repair, minimally invasive and robotic cardiac surgery, as well as arterial revascularization. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and has completed his training in the prestigious Oxford/Southampton program, recognized for its high-quality cardiac surgery outcomes.

His experience is complemented by several notable publications in leading medical journals and extensive experience in cardiothoracic surgery, the hospital stated. He has performed more than 600 cardiac surgeries as the primary surgeon. His extensive fellowship training includes specialized experiences in mitral valve repair with a Carpentier-trained surgeon in France and endoscopic mitral valve surgery and robot-assisted coronary surgery in one of Europe’s leading centres in Belgium.

Most recently, he served as the AATS Evarts A. Graham Memorial Traveling Fellow at the Cleveland Clinic, focusing on robotic mitral and minimally invasive surgery.

“Southlake is proud to have recruited such a talent like Dr. Rehman, and it goes to show the strength of our cardiac program,” said Dr. Christopher Overgaard, chief of the department of cardiac health. “Our commitment to excellence and innovation will continue to bring global talent to our hospital, ensuring that Southlake Health patients will receive life-saving cardiac care for generations to come.”

In this role, Dr. Rehman will contribute to revitalizing the cardiovascular surgery program, working alongside the leadership team for Southlake’s department of cardiac health. Additionally, he will work as an assistant professor in the department of surgery at the University of Toronto.

“Southlake Health’s department of cardiac health has saved countless lives, and our team is dedicated to advancing the regional program, saving patients trips into the city by delivering leading-edge care, close to home,” said Derek McNally, executive vice-president, clinical services, and chief operating officer. “Recruiting a talent like Dr. Rehman to our team will greatly improve access to specialized cardiac care in the region.”

"As a Level 7 regional cardiac program, Southlake’s contributions to advancing cardiac care extends far beyond the operating room. The highly skilled team of medical staff and staff provide almost every type of cardiac care, with the exception of heart transplants and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), saving patients from no longer needing to travel to Toronto for world-class care," the hospital said.

"As leaders in their fields, the team actively participate in ground-breaking research and are often the first to perform industry-leading procedures in Ontario, Canada and the world. Southlake continues to collaborate with international experts to enhance cardiac care and improve patient outcomes globally."
