Bradford is the latest municipality to get its own board game, Bradford-Opoly.
The game, released by Outset Media features well-known landmarks, streets and attractions of the town such as Carrot Fest, Holland Street, and Lion's Park.
Outset Media is a Canadian privately held wholesale supplier and manufacturer of toys, games and puzzles based out of Victoria, B.C.
It was Walmart Canada who came up with the idea to take the popular game and turn them into novelty versions of Canadian cities.
“Outset Media is excited to help families across Canada celebrate where they live. These games were created to help people appreciate some things they cherish about their community," said Jean-Paul Teskey, senior vice-president of Outset Media. “The support that communities across Canada have given these games has made it possible for Outset Media to add dozens of additional cities and towns in brand new games that will be released throughout 2021!”
In the first year of business, they focused on major cities such as Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, then later expanded to smaller communities. In June, a Barrie-Opoly was released with only 1,000 copies made.
There were only 720 copies of the Bradford version made, which sold out almost immediately after hitting the shelves this past weekend.
But Teskey told BradfordToday that due to popularity, more will be coming to the Bradford location and online store soon.
In total, there are 170 Canadian cities/towns with their own version of the popular game. Teskey says it is the smaller cities/towns like Bradford that have the best sales. The town of Milton had their board game released the same time as Bradford's and sold out within one hour.
"They (the residents) see it as a celebration of their community," he said.
Outset Media is currently finalizing its lists of new cities that will be added in 2022. Only cities/towns with Walmart locations are considered for a game.
