Veterans were honoured over the weekend at The Bradford Legion Veterans Dinner and Bradford Rattlers hockey game.
The dinner on Saturday night was a sold-out event, where veterans stood up and were recognized for their service.
A roast beef meal was provided by Tony Garcia of Poleiro BBQ and poppy cookies from Bonnie Aguiar of Sweet B's Bakery.
Aguiar had been selling the poppy design cookies this week with $584 of the proceeds going to the Legion's Poppy Fund.
"Military veterans wear their medals on the left side of their chests…over their hearts. That’s how you can recognize them," Veteran Mike Comeau told the crowd at the Veterans Dinner Saturday night at the Legion.
Local dignitaries, Mayor Rob Keffer, Deputy Mayor James Leduc, Councillors Peter Ferragine, Mark Contois, Gary Lamb and MP Scot Davidson were also in attendance.
Commemorative speeches were made by Mayor Keffer, MP Davidson and special guest, Richard Morrison with York Regional Police, thanking the veterans for their sacrifice.
"It is so important for us all to thank each and every person who has served our country and I was proud to be able to support this meaningful event," said Davidson.
A special thank you to all the kitchen volunteers: Laura, Charlotte, Nathan, Noah, Wanda, Steve, and both Spencers.
And a big thank you to Poppy Chair Anne Silvey with some special help from George, Alice, Elsie, Tammy, Wendy, Dave and all the Legion Volunteers and Executives for organizing.
On Sunday night, veterans were honoured at The Bradford Rattlers hockey game at the BWG Leisure Centre in a moment of silence before Second World War veteran Brian Mallett walked out to drop the puck.
Members of the Legion were present in uniform to show their support.
