'Very important': Bradford event promotes back-to-school safety

Ice cream, face painting and school supplies accompany advice from police in Ward 1

For this Bradford councillor, safety remains the No. 1 priority.

Ward 1 Coun. Cheraldean Duhaney teamed up with the South Simcoe Police Service and Bradford West Gwillimbury Fire and Emergency Services to host a community safety event ahead of students’ return to school on Labour Day, Sept. 2 at Alan Kuzmich Park.

“It was very important to our Ward 1 community and me to host this event to bring families and neighbours together in a safe, fun environment as we prepare for the new school year,” Duhaney said.

Const. Mark Colucci was on hand to offer a few tips on community safety to everyone headed back to school, some of which included:

  • Kids should always cross at crosswalks and follow crossing guards.
  • Drivers must reduce speed in school zones and stop for buses.
  • Wear helmets, follow road rules, and use hand signals when biking.

For the roughly 200 people who attended, the event also featured free ice cream, face painting by Minerva’s Creations, 80 back packs with back-to-school supplies donated by Impact Youth and Cultural Centre and even goody bags and pet safety tips from Pet Valu Bradford.

“It's important to me that we create opportunities for residents to engage with one another and with our community safety officers,” Duhaney said. “This event provides a space to foster relationships, discuss safety concerns, and ensure our children return to school with a sense of security and excitement.”
