Back in 2004, when Metrolinx agreed to restore the historic Bradford train station and repave the GO station parking lot, the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury’s share of the cost was $417,000.

Instead of paying cash, the town worked out an agreement with Metrolinx to provide winter maintenance, including snow and ice clearance of the parking lots and access roads.

That agreement has been extended, year after year, even after the original bill was deemed to be paid off in 2016.

In 2008, Metrolinx replaced a culvert, and the town agreed to pay its $387,172 share through the continued provision of winter maintenance services.

On Tuesday night in Committee of the Whole meeting, council recommended a further extension of the maintenance agreement with Metrolinx to 2026, once the details have been formalized.

As spelled out in the new agreement, the town will continue to be responsible for clearing ice and snow from parking lots, roads and the Kiss-and-Ride within six hours of a snowfall, and at least 30 minutes before the station opens or by 6 a.m., “whichever is sooner.” Town staff will also be responsible for salting of the lots and roads.

The estimated value of the winter maintenance is $38,000 to $39,000 per year.

Mayor Rob Keffer questioned the impact of Metrolinx’s plans to expand the parking lot in future, a proposal that would add 79 new parking spaces, and six spaces for motorcycle parking.

Director of Corporate Services Rebecca Murphy noted that construction was unlikely to begin before 2022, and would not impact maintenance costs, once completed.

Council voted in favour of the extension.

"We've had a lengthy agreement with Metrolinx. It's a pretty good agreement," said Deputy Mayor James Leduc. "It's a pretty good relationship we have with Metrolinx."

More details on the Bradford  GO Station revitalization will be announced early this year. Deputy Mayor Leduc noted Ward 2 Coun. Jonathan Scott's efforts in helping get the project moving.

"Great news that they are expanding the GO Train Station," said Mayor Keffer.
