The Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury is proud to announce the establishment of its new Youth Council Advisory Committee, aimed at empowering young residents to actively participate in shaping their community. This exciting initiative is a platform for youth to engage in municipal decision-making, provide valuable input on important issues, and foster leadership development.

The committee was formed after Councillor Duhaney's motion at the April 2, 2024, Council meeting. Following staff approval and a public application process, five remarkable youth members were selected to represent the committee who held its first meeting on Nov. 20, 2024.

The Committee, chaired by Kyle Lawson, with Syreeika Pryce serving as Vice-Chair, will work under the guidance of Mentor Chairs, Mayor James Leduc and Councillor Cheraldean Duhaney. The committee members include Keira Calhoun, Niki Tokhi, and Faran Ahmad—an exceptional group of youth leaders, all aged 12 to 18, committed to making a difference in BWG.

“We are thrilled to launch the Youth Council Advisory Committee and are inspired by the enthusiasm and dedication of its members,” said Mayor Leduc. “This initiative is a testament to our commitment to ensuring that young voices are heard and valued in shaping the future of our community.”

Councillor Duhaney added, “I was excited to bring this motion forward and am even more thrilled to see it established. As leaders, our best investment is in our young people. I look forward to working alongside our youth, mentoring them, and valuing their ideas, concerns, and suggestions to help strengthen and enrich our community."

The mission of the Youth Council Advisory Committee is to engage young people in local governance by advising on policies, programs, and initiatives that impact them.

The Committee's activities include:

  • Making recommendations to Council on youth-related issues such as education, recreation, employment, and public safety.
  • Advising Town staff and elected officials on policies and programs impacting youth.
  • Organizing events, projects, and campaigns to address youth concerns and encourage civic participation.

As the Committee begins its work, the Town eagerly anticipates the impact this dynamic group will have on BWG.
