Spare some time for Bradford's Bowl for Kids Sake fundraiser

Enjoy an afternoon of bowling fun and raise money for Big Brothers Big Sisters of York, which offers programs and services in Bradford West Gwillimbury

There will be fandemonium at Bradford Underground Bowl on March 3.

That’s because the teams taking part in the annual Bowl for Kids Sake, who will raise money for Big Brothers Big Sisters of York, have been challenged to wear their favourite team jerseys, caps and colours as they bowl.

The event, sponsored by A&B Courier, is a key fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters of York, its Big-Little matches and mentoring programs, both in schools and in the community. Local families, businesses and organizations are encouraged to sign up as a team of four to six bowlers (although teams can be bigger), with each bowler raising $100 in pledges.

Bowl for Kids Sake has been a tradition in Bradford West Gwillimbury for more than 25 years, said Neil Haggarty, fundraising administrator for Big Brothers Big Sisters of York.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of York provides programs and services to Bradford West Gwillimbury, including the Go Girls! Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds program at the BWG Leisure Centre.

This year, there will be teams from the Town of BWG, Bradford Lions Club, and the Bradford legion – but there are still lanes available for those wishing to participate.

Organizers are hoping more teams will sign up for an hour or two of fundraising and fun.

“Unfortunately, due to a significant loss in funding at the end of 2018, some of our programs have had to be scaled back – so this year’s A&B Courier Bowl For Kids Sake is more important than ever,” said CEO Sarah Dame.

There are two Bowl for Kids Sake community days planned locally: March 3 at 1 p.m. at Bradford Underground Bowl, 54 Holland St. W., and March 30 at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. at Newmarket’s Stellar Lanes, 1220 Stellar Dr.

Each event will offer bowling, prizes, and surprises, while raising funds for Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Note: There is currently a waiting list in Bradford of boys waiting for a Big Brother. “Anyone interested in becoming a Big Brother, please go to the website and select the volunteer button!” said Haggarty.
