Skating with the MPP at the Free Family Day Weekend skate in Bradford (17 photos)

'Family Day's a great opportunity to get together'

Member of Provincial Parliament for York-Simcoe Caroline Mulroney had a rare opportunity to spend time with her family – and with constituents, supporters and friends, at the BWG Leisure Centre on Sunday afternoon, at her annual Free Family Day Skate.

“It’s my second one,” said Mulroney.

Last year, she held the free skate event in Georgina. This year, she was at the BWG Leisure Centre, reserving the Blue Rink for two hours of free skating for the community.

“Family Day’s a great opportunity to get together,” Mulroney said, as families laced up to enjoy free skating, cookies and hot chocolate.

Among those joining the MPP were members of local town council, councillors Raj Sandhu, Mark Contois, Peter Dykie Jr., Ron Orr, Gary Baynes, and Deputy Mayor James Leduc. Leduc was the only one to lace up and take to the ice.

There was another long-time supporter, and familiar face in Bradford, spotted on the rink. Peter Van Loan, former federal MP for York-Simcoe, came out to reconnect, and skate.

Mulroney not only spent time with her four children and husband Andrew Lapham, she had the opportunity to chat with constituents, listen to their concerns, and even answer a few questions.

The Ontario Minister of Transportation was asked about the Highway 400-404 Link, better known as the Bradford Bypass – a long-awaited project that was relaunched by the Conservative government with much fanfare in October of last year.

“I’ve been pushing very hard to get the expedited Environmental Assessment,” the first essential step in the highway construction project, Miulroney said, adding that she hoped to be able to make an announcement in the coming months.

Then it was off for another circuit of the rink, and more time with family, friends and the community on the Family Day long weekend.
