Five people were taken to hospital with serious injuries after a two-vehicle crash involving a police pursuit, Tuesday evening on County Road 88, shutting down a section of road.
Around 5:30 p.m., South Simcoe police officers began investigating a vehicle at the Tanger Outlets mall in the Cookstown area.
When the “vehicle of interest” left the parking lot, officers followed, according to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), which is now involved.
The vehicle went eastbound on Highway 89, southbound on 10 Sideroad and then westbound on County Road 88.
East of Highway 400, the vehicle collided with with pickup truck that was travelling eastbound.
Three occupants in the “vehicle of interest” and two people from the pickup truck were taken to hospital with serious injuries, according to the SIU.
Authorities have not released the reason for the pursuit or the condition of the five people injured in the crash.
Four investigators, three forensic investigators and a collision reconstructionist have been assigned to the case.
It remains unclear how long that section of County Road 88 will be closed.
The SIU is appealing for witnesses. Anyone with information is asked to call the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.The SIU’s mandate is to investigate any interaction involving police when there has been death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.
