Firefighters from the Bradford and King departments were called to a residential structure fire Dec. 8.

The Bradford West Gwillimbury community is rallying to support three families affected by a devastating blaze in the south end of town earlier this month.

On Dec. 8, Bradford and King firefighters, South Simcoe police and area paramedics were called to a structure fire near the intersection of River Road and Canal Road in Bradford, near the King Township border.

The house, which contained three units, was destroyed, displacing two couples and a five-member family.

However, a GoFundMe page organized by friend Jaymee Harrison had raised more than $21,500 as of the morning of Dec. 24. The campaign’s goal is $25,000.

“These families have lost everything,” said Harrison in a post on the campaign page. “While we were hopeful one unit might be saved, we have since learned the devastating news that nothing could be recovered. The families now face the overwhelming reality that their insurance policies do not cover rental costs, leaving them without a place to stay while their homes are completely gutted and rebuilt.”

Proceeds will help ease the financial burden on the families by covering rental costs for temporary housing and replacing essential items lost in the fire.

“Losing our home was a very difficult time for our family,” said campaign beneficiary Nancy Petherick. “We are still navigating an unknown situation and have a lot of uncertainty about the near future. What we know for certain is that people are good, kindness is real and community is still alive. Throughout this tragedy, our faith in people has been restored. We feel so loved (and) blessed, the kindness has been overwhelming. We were truly reminded of what's important and that alone has been a blessing.

“This Christmas, we would like to share our heartfelt gratitude to everyone. To those we haven't yet thanked personally, know we are eternally grateful for your help, prayers, positive vibes and well wishes.”

Fire crews used water from the Holland River on the other side of the road and the Sovereign Grace Church to help extinguish the blaze.

Two cats were brought out of the building and attended to by fire crews and paramedics. However, one has died.

“As the holiday season approaches, these families face an unimaginable loss and need our help to rebuild their lives,” Harrison said.
