We had the privilege of sitting down with Donna Katz, the current president of the Bradford Board of Trade (BBT). Before it became the BBT, this impactful organization was known as the Bradford District Chamber of Commerce. In 2008, it was re-branded. In our conversation, Katz shares insights into what the BBT does, reasons for joining, and the benefits it provides to local businesses and the community at large.
What is the Bradford Board of Trade?
Katz: The BBT is a local organization that brings together business owners, entrepreneurs, and community leaders with the goal of promoting economic growth and development within Bradford and its surrounding areas. It acts as a support network and advocacy group that champions the interests of local businesses.
Why should someone consider joining the BBT? What’s in it for them?
Katz: Joining the BBT provides invaluable opportunities for networking, collaboration, and support. Members benefit from increased visibility in the community, access to exclusive events, business resources, and the collective strength that comes with being part of a well-connected group. It’s a place to grow your professional network, find partnerships, and keep up with local economic trends.
What types of events does the BBT organize?
Katz: We host networking mixers, workshops, panel discussions, community shows, and grand openings. Members can also join local initiatives like shop-local campaigns and seasonal events that connect businesses with the community.
What is so different about the board of trade now compared to the past?
Katz: The BBT has become more dynamic, inclusive, and tech-savvy. New leadership and evolving economic needs have led to expanded membership benefits and a more collaborative, sustainability-focused environment, ensuring businesses are heard and supported.
What’s one of your favourite parts of being a part of the BBT?
Katz: One of my favourite parts is the sense of community and shared purpose. Being surrounded by like-minded individuals who are passionate about growing their businesses and uplifting the community creates an inspiring and supportive atmosphere. The events and connections made through the board foster meaningful relationships that go beyond just business.
And if anyone is thinking about joining, what would I say to them?
Katz: If you’re thinking about joining, I’d say go for it! The value you gain — from networking, visibility, advocacy, and personal development — far outweighs the commitment. You’ll be part of a vibrant network that genuinely cares about the success of its members and the prosperity of the local community. It’s an investment in your business and in the community as a whole.
