Japanese cheesecake store opens in Newmarket (10 photos)

Supermoon is the latest venture for local businessman Wasim Jarrah, who vows to give back on every cake sold

With lineups out the door, Wasim Jarrah considers his new business, Supermoon Japanese Cheesecake, to be a success.

The real estate agent and business owner celebrated the grand opening of his new venture on Saturday, Dec. 11. The store, located at 695 Stonehaven Ave., offers fluffy Japanese-style cheesecakes.

“We brought it into the market to fill a gap. People wanted something different,” Jarrah said, adding that the dessert isn’t very heavy but has a sweet taste to it.

This is the first Japanese cheesecake store in the area. He said prior to opening, they did a lot of research and determined there was a strong market for this type of product.

They also put a lot of thought into where the store would be located, how it would operate, and decided to do take-out only right from the start.

“COVID has taught us that we have to think smarter,” he said.

So far those decisions have paid off after their soft-launch on Nov. 26, with customers lined up out the door to get their cheesecakes.

“We’re selling out every single day and we’re not even fully open yet,” Jarrah said, looking back at the soft-launch period.

He credits community support for this early success, and said he has been encouraged by the Town of Newmarket, the Newmarket Chamber of Commerce, and residents of Newmarket.

“It’s been amazing. I love the community support. I think that is what’s absolutely driven it. We have a unique product but a unique product without community support doesn’t mean anything,” Jarrah said.

To carry on the community support he is going to be using this business to give back.

“I’ve already committed for the month of December, any cake that we sell, a dollar from every cheesecake will be donated to Blue Door to help them out. We have to continuously give back,” he said.

According to Jarrah, giving back is one of his core principles.

“I do it at my real estate business right now and it won’t change in any business that I choose to operate. Giving back to the community will always be at the heart of everything that we do,” he said.

Getting into the food sector is a far step for the real estate agent who said he is “the worst cook,” but he said he has an amazing team at the store and he believes in the product and his business partners.

The Newmarket store is the third Supermoon Japanese Cheesecake location, with the first two in Mississauga. It was opened by husband and wife duo Sami Kustantini and Mona Halabi.
